Agroecology in Ukraine: Science, Practice, and Social Movement
This analytical report comes from our Ukrainian colleagues in the Bilim Alliance and the Department of Economy and Policy of Agrarian Transformations at the Institute for Economics and Forecasting of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.
The report, “Agroecology in Ukraine: Science, Practice, and Social Movement,” was developed to disseminate new knowledge about the socio-economic potential of agroecology in Ukraine.
It explores the evolution of the agroecological concept and scientific thinking on agroecology, as well as the fundamental principles that define agroecology both as a system of agricultural production and as a framework for building sustainable, fair and inclusive agri-food systems grounded in human rights.
The report provides an analytical assessment of agroecologically oriented practices across different types of economic entities. It offers a typology and mapping of production practices, scientific and educational initiatives, and social movements, and presents the Agroecological Map of Ukraine developed on this basis.
It also proposes a set of strategic measures to support Ukraine’s agroecological transition, including the development of a National Roadmap to coordinate pathways and actions for scaling up agroecology, improving the institutional environment, and establishing mechanisms to monitor and evaluate the transition.
The report is intended for a broad audience, including professionals in agricultural economics, sociology, food security, public administration and local governance, as well as researchers, educators and the international community.
